My Furkids
57Our Pets
It's so amazing how pets have become such a big part of everyone's lives these days. For years I would not own a dog because someone let my lovable mutt loose and he was hit by a car and killed. That pretty much devastated me.
While growing up my children always wanted another dog but I refused. I did not want to go through that loss again. Plus when you take in a dog you are looking at possibly 12-13 years or more, a lot of responsibility and we were never home. With soccer, football, cheerleading, and school we were always on the go..
After college my daughter still lived with us for awile. She had a good job and wanted to buy a dog. I gave in thinking it would be her dog, her time, vet bills, food, etc.
Of course, I fell in love with this precious miniature black and brown dachshund named Macy. I had a photography studio at the time and started taking her along with me to work. She became quite popular and also posed for many senior pictures with teenagers. She was even pictured in a few yearbooks. My business mascot.
Eventually she became mine.. My daughter fell in love, soon married and had children. It would have been difficult at that time to for me to give her up anyway.
Soon after I visited a dog shelter. I love animals so much and should never go there. I spoke to this beautiful Husky mix with blue eyes. She looked so sad and stared at me continuously as I walked around looking at the other dogs. I kept going back to her because I felt so bad. There were other people there but she held that glare on me.
So now we have two dogs. Jasmine, the newest was about 1 1/2 years old, spayed and housebroken. She is one of the sweetest and calmest dogs I've ever had. I do believe she was abused. She is always jumpy and ducking but she kindly deals with the rest of the furkids.
Next I was driving by a pet shop and saw dachshund on the sign. I should have known better than to even stop. When my husband came home from he was greeted by our newest member of the family, Bucky the llittle red dachshund.. Our only boy except for Thomas the cat. The very first pet in our home. The comical orange cat that deals with all of this chaos.
My husband finally said, no more please. I agreed. As said before, wning pets is a big responsibility including the costs.
We always take them out but they really enjoy the hikes in the woods. Good exercise for my husband and me also. We sometimes go to the lake nearby and they like the water. Especially in the summertime.
I don't go as far as to dress them. Well, I must confess. I did try with Macy but that was useless. The money I'd spend on an outfit, to wrestle with her to get it on then watch her pull those short little legs out and quickly leave the outfit laying there on the floor.
They are like having children which I must say I started all this after my two children grew up and left home. Maybe empty nest syndrome?
They each have their own personalities. Macy is the Monarch. Jasmine is the easy going one that lefts everything roll over her including the dogs. Bucky was always the little rascal. Always in trouble but after neutering he calmed down quite a bit. Bucky also does not like adults but any child can enter our home. He loves children but does not welcome their parents. I still don't understand that one.
Then one day I found Penelope the Boston Terrier. I call her my Boston Terror. Spoiled by my husband he said yes. I will tell you one thing though. He loves all the furkids as much if not more than I do.
Growing up I had two boston terriers and always wanted another one. She is unique. She is chocolate and white. She's crazy but she's a terrier. She chews everything in sight which has been trying my patience. Yes, she has many chew toys which they all share and fight over. She is a runner when all the others stay in the yard. She'll dodge and tease me for awhile and will finally come when called. We have a small stream in the yard which she will jump in and roll through the mud. Nothing that a little hose down takes care of.
So these are my furkids for the time being. Yes, they are a lot of work and they are a lot of love and I wouldn't change it for anything. Thank God I do not have a bigger home or land. Who knows what I'd have but can you relate to my story?

Yes, I think that animals are like children too and can understand your love for them! It is a great shame that that there aren't a lot more people like us to give homes to all the millions of unwanted dogs and cats!
We've currently got 5 indoor cats, and they're our babies! Our boys are Skylar and Carbon, and our girls are Tabby, Rori, and Starla. We also foster from time to time, as homeless/abandoned cats or feral kittens come our way. We feed the neighborhood ferals too. See my profile for more about our furry family. :) They are the joy of my life. :)

Oh, I can so relate, RBG! How wonderful it is to meet your furkids and their terrific - and different - personalities. Bless you for giving them all a happy home.
I call mine my fuzzy kids. Two is all I can handle at the moment but if I were very rich and had a very big place - it's frightening to contemplate what I might get up to!
